FREE Arts Award follow up sessions - Cornwall 13 Sep 2010

Have you completed your Arts Award training but still feel you need a bit of support? Come along to one of the FREE Arts Award follow up sessions.

This session will be led by an Arts Award Trainer and will go over your role as the adviser, using the toolkit and the resources and support on the website, group discussion about elements you might be finding difficult, helping young people evidence their work and create portfolios, and how to present portfolios for the moderators and how to organise moderations…and anything else you might have a question about!

Kneehigh events with free / heavily subsidised ticket scheme

Kneehigh is about to launch The Asylum - out brand new nomadic venue with a five week Cornwall run consisting of three shows from our prolific thirty year history. The shows are The Red Shoes, The King of Prussia and BLAST. We are also hosting four family days featuring Cscape and Squashbox Theatre.
As well as the shows, there will be live music, interactive art, food, drink and much, much more.

We are keen to extend the offer to come along and participate in this event to as wide a community possible. To this end, we are running the CONNECTIONS scheme - aimed at widening the scope of our audience - with a free and / or heavily subsidised ticket scheme.

Our three targeted groups are:

1: Young People
2: People who are resident in the immediate geographical area near to the Asylum site (Camborne, Poole, Redruth / Mt Hawke, St Agnes).
3. Groups who deal with bereavement and / or displacement.

We have a limited number of these tickets still available.

Asylum, please do get into contact.

Make IT Happy Competition Is Now Open (UK) - deadline 30 July 2010


e-skills UK, the Sector Skills Council for Business and Information Technology has announced the Make IT Happy Competition is now open to applications from primary schools in the UK. This year the theme of the competition is "Get your community online" and it aims to reward the most innovative, community focused IT project created by 9 to 11 year olds. New projects can be entered, or one the school is already involved in or has been involved in recently. Projects can be presented by using a:

• podcast
• video
• animation
• radio show
• website
• radio ad.

The winning school from each of the English Regions and Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland will receive a cash prize of £1,200. They will also be a prize for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed school selected from the regional winners and they will receive a cash prize of £4,000 for first place; £2,500 for second place; and £1,500 for 3rd place.

The deadline for entries is the 30th July 2010.

Craft Club – promoting crafts in schools


Craft Club is championing the place of craft in schools, in an attempt to revive craft learning in younger generations. It believes that children and young people should have the chance to learn about craft and have access to excellent teaching throughout their education. So if you want to learn or pass on craft skills, then start your own Craft Club! It is free!

The first element in this exciting new project is Knit 1, Pass It On. Knitting gives a sense of achievement and boosts coordination, improving dexterity, maths and handwriting. The generous support of Craft Club’s partners and volunteers will help make it happen. Craft Club offers advice, resources and support to inspire teachers, pupils and volunteers to set up clubs during lunchtimes or after-hours in their school or venue.

Voice for teachers & Sing ing and songs workshops - Bristol & Truro - July & August 2010

'Voice for teachers' - this workshop explores a range of techniques and strategies for finding, developing and keeping a strong supported voice.  No previous experience needed - come prepared to play!


'Singing and songs' - this workshop explores a range of vocal games and exercises and will give you a bag full of rounds and songs to play with.  No previous experience needed - come prepared to play!

2010 Dates so far:
Voice for teachers - July 17/18 - Tobacco Factory - Bristol
Singing and songs - August 14/15 - Tobacco Factory - Bristol

These workshops run over a weekend from 10-5 both days

Voice for teachers - July 31 - Truro

The cost for the workshop is £100 (£50 for a one day workshop)

This includes tea/coffee/biscuits and all supporting materials. There is a maximum number of 25 people on all workshops.

South West Youth Jazz Orchestra - 9 - 13 August 2010


The course is intended to benefit musicians who wish to take their playing up to the next level, from the high standard of opportunities we already have available in the South West counties. With only one player to a part, you may need to attend an audition as places could be fiercely contested!


In partnership with Devon Music Service

Open only to young musicians of 13-18yrs resident in the South West region, this brand new Youth Big Band will be led and coached by Brass Jaw, a professional jazz ensemble with incredible momentum, drive and charisma. Come to Exeter Uni for 5 days of jazz you’ll never forget!


Managed by South West Music School on behalf of a partnership between The Dartington Hall Trust, King Edward VI Community College and University College Falmouth. The Dartington Hall Trust is a registered charity, no. 279756.


Applicants must be of Grade 8 standard or higher, with experience of jazz performance, from the following instrument list: Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, Baritone), Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Keys, Bass (double bass / bass guitar), Drums/percussion, Voice.


This course takes place at the University of Exeter as part of the Dartington Summer Youth Programme 2010. The Natural Theatre Company - Work Experience Workshop Week

Spend a week with the highly aclaimed Natural Theatre Company creating your own Theatre Company.
An opportunity to work with professional performers at the Natural Theatre Company Headquarters for 5 days. Experience what it is like to create your own theatre company, devise a piece of theatre and perform it on the streets of Bath.

The week will include:
• A thorough look at the 40 year history of the company.
• Training in Street Theatre technique
• A chance to try out some of the company’s scenarios.
• A tour of the building including time with Admin and Technical staff.
• The creation of the students’ own company including naming, finding a style, delegating roles, applying for funding, marketing and design.
• Developing a piece of original Street Theatre including scenario, characters, costume and props.
• Performing their piece on the streets of Bath.

This is a unique experience for any students wanting to enter the Creative Industries.

Calling all budding young writers!!  Are you aged 13-18? Writing competition - deadline 30 July 2010

Would you like the chance to win £1000 cash???

The Priory invites entries for it’s annual young persons writing competition with the chance of winning £1000!

The Priory Ryan McKay Prize is a national non-fiction writing competition for people aged 13 - 18 with the aim of raising awareness of positive mental and physical health among young people - who are most at risk of developing eating disorders.


The prize is awarded each year to the young person who writes the best essay on a set topic related to mental and physical health.

You don’t have to be the next Shakespeare or Stephanie Meyer; all you have to do is write what you feel, what your thinking or what you’ve experienced…….

Typed, double-spaced entries of 1,200 words should be emailed to prioryryanmckayprize@priorygroup.com along with your name, address, your date of birth and a contact telephone number.

Free theatre tickets with A Night Less Ordinary - Now available for group bookings!


Arts Council England's free theatre scheme for young people, A Night Less Ordinary has recently celebrated its first birthday. In the last year, tens of thousands of tickets have been given away across the country - with tickets to some of England's most exciting shows available at the 200 venues participating in the scheme.

Circo Kernow’s FREE accredited course’s new venue:
Circus Skills for performance!

The aim of this course is to develop performance skills to showcase in a final production.
Aimed at Young People (15+) who are out of work and education.

Trainees will:

- Learn skills such as acrobatics, yoga and acro-balance, clowning, mime and mask, juggling, diablo and stilt-walking, aerial (trapeze, corde lisse and silks).
- Improve concentration, co-ordination, balance, strength and flexibility.
- Meet new people, build confidence and self-esteem.
- Perform at events across Cornwall
- Receive a Certificate of Merit, an Arts Award or an NCFE Level 2 (national certificate in further education equivalent to a GCSE)

Tate St Ives - Teachers In Partnership (TiP) 2010-11

TiP is a professional development programme open to KS1-4 teachers and teaching assistants. The aims of the course are to:

• Develop subject knowledge of historic, modern and contemporary art
• Explore strategies for using a gallery as a teaching and learning resource
• Consider ways of extending gallery visits in the classroom
• Work with artist-educators, learning curators and other teachers to share good practice
• Enjoy the opportunity to work with your peers and reflect on your teaching practice across an academic year

Evaluating Youth Arts Projects - 18 October 2010 - Plymouth

18th October 2010, 9.45 am- 4 pm, Theatre Royal Plymouth

Artsplan, the training and publications department of Artswork and in-house training provider for ENYAN (English National Youth Arts Network), is pleased to be delivering the one day course ‘Evaluating Youth Arts Projects’ on 18th October 2010 at Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Artsplan is the largest provider of specialist youth arts training courses and publications in the UK and all training and publications are written and supported by experienced youth arts specialists, currently involved in direct project work with young people.

This one-day training course explores the benefits of meaningful evaluation of youth arts projects. Beginning by addressing preconceptions around evaluation (constructive exercise or chore?) the course will progress to examine methodologies, structured approaches and case studies using a series of collaborative exercises and tutor led presentations. Informative and practical, this course will help you develop your own individual approach to creative evaluation and the confidence you need to engage with evaluating youth arts projects.

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the course and a wealth of practical resources. Prices for each course, which include lunch and refreshments, range from £110 to £150, with limited bursaries available. Gold Arts Award on the UCAS Tariff


Trinity Guildhall and Arts Council England are delighted to announce that the Level 3 Gold Arts Award has been recognised on the UCAS Tariff.


The Gold Arts Award has been awarded 35 Tariff points by UCAS. This compares to AS Level qualification C Grade (40 points), Higher Sports Leader Award (30 points) and Music Theory Examinations Grade 8 Distinction (30 points).

Students applying to University for the 2011/12 academic year who have achieved a Gold Arts Award will be able to include it as they would do other subjects when completing their UCAS application form.

The Gold Arts Award is a Vocationally Related Qualification: its strengths are the opportunities it provides for independent learning and the way it facilitates both the development of teamwork and leadership skills and growth in knowledge, skills and understanding of art forms. The award gives young people valuable experiences leading and working with others in the cultural sector, preparing them for the wider world of work and study.

Gold Award participants extend themselves as artists, explore the professional arts world and lead their own arts project. They build their skills as effective leaders and deliver a project to a public audience.
